Background of the Study
Food security remains a critical issue in both urban and rural households, affecting health, economic stability, and overall quality of life. In Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria, diverse challenges contribute to food insecurity, including economic disparities, inadequate agricultural production, and supply chain inefficiencies. Urban households face issues such as high food prices and limited access to fresh produce, while rural households struggle with low agricultural yields and vulnerability to environmental changes (Ibe, 2023). Efforts to address food security have involved government interventions, community programs, and agricultural innovations. However, disparities persist, underscoring the need for comprehensive strategies that address both urban and rural contexts. This study aims to examine the underlying factors contributing to food security challenges in Awka South, comparing the experiences of urban and rural households. It will analyze economic, environmental, and social determinants of food access and stability. The findings are expected to inform policy recommendations and community initiatives that enhance food security and promote sustainable development in the region. Ultimately, targeted interventions will help bridge the urban–rural divide in food access.
Statement of the Problem
Despite various interventions, food security remains a significant challenge for households in Awka South. Urban residents grapple with high food costs and limited access to nutritious food, while rural communities face production challenges and environmental vulnerabilities (Ibe, 2023). The disparity between urban and rural food security highlights systemic issues in resource distribution and agricultural support. Inadequate infrastructure, economic instability, and fluctuating market conditions exacerbate these challenges, undermining overall household well-being. This study seeks to investigate the specific factors contributing to food insecurity in both urban and rural settings, providing a comparative analysis of household experiences. The research will identify key obstacles and propose actionable strategies to improve food access, affordability, and nutritional outcomes.
Objectives of the Study:
To compare food security challenges in urban and rural households.
To identify the key factors contributing to food insecurity.
To recommend strategies for improving food security in Awka South.
Research Questions:
What are the main food security challenges faced by urban and rural households?
How do economic, environmental, and social factors influence food security?
What interventions can enhance food access and stability?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Economic disparities significantly affect food security in households.
H2: Environmental challenges contribute to rural food insecurity.
H3: Integrated interventions can improve food security outcomes.
